Beginning TOS Star Trek Uniform

Last weekend, I went to Bear Lake and had a fabulous time with my friends. Unfortunately, I got a bad sunburn, so I haven’t been mobile enough to work on my Wonder Woman costume. I also saw the new Star Trek movie, and decided I needed a new Starfleet uniform for SL Comic Con in September.

There are many patterns available online, including two out of print patterns from Simplicity (one for the Original Series, and one for the Next Generation). There are also scans of patterns from the Starfleet Technical Manual available for free online (but only in one size). Since free is my favorite price, I downloaded the Officer’s uniform version of the duty uniform, loaded it into Illustrator, and started playing.

 Pattern Pieces

The above pattern pieces were shrinked to fit on a sheet of book paper. The scale was included, so the first thing I did was use Illustrator to blow it back up to 1:1 real-size.

I traced paths around each pattern piece, using inspiration from a tutorial posted on RalphPink.com, released all the guides so I could play with line color and width, copied the whole thing into a new document consisting of 49 US letter-sized art boards, and printed the pattern pieces. I've included a pdf copy here for anyone else to use.

My next step is to cut out and tape together the pattern pieces, write out the finished garment measurements, then grade the pattern out to my size. But, since my sunburn is finally starting to heal, this project will have to go back into my sewing queue.
